Spreading shrub grows to about 5 feet but can be trained to grow treelike (as at Garvan Woodland Gardens). Austin AgaveGrower: Burns Twice Farm
Price: $10.00 ( one small plant )Available (Exact): 2
Amazingly, agave is in the asparagus family. There are many species; Based on the leaf structures, size and coloration, I believe this species is Agave americana. They are sometimes referred to as "Century" plants because they are long-growing--maybe as long as 30 years-- before putting on a spectacular stalk with yellow flowers at their end. I prefer "Sentry" plants, which seems evident from the photo; they have vicious, spikey leaves which along with the hurtful tip have toothy thorny edges. (Agave can produce various levels of poke and scratch injuries so wear leather gloves and sturdy clothing when handling. We cut the sharp, leaftips off our plants.)
We brought back a baby agave plant a few years back from Austin, TX. We thought it would be a good companion for our Saquaros and Barrel Cacti. (We are planning for the climate change we can expect in Arkansas.) We protected it from the cold, wet, Arkansas winters until it got too big to handle. Three years ago, we transplanted it to a hot, dry spot and now it is creating baby plants on runners.

Bearded IrisGrower: Burns Twice Farm
Price: $10.00 ( 12 plants )Available (Exact): 0
Fall is a perfect time to plant Irises!
A bed of Bearded Iris (Iris germanica), a majestic, eye-catching, perennial, makes an everlasting statement in the sunny spot in your yard. Irises thrive in sunny, well-drained, sandy-loam soils and require minimal care. Plant 4 inches deep in neutral or slightly acidic soils. Deer-resistant.
Enveloping shade requires us to downsize and move our mixed, iris beds. We've enjoyed their yearly displays for decades. A 4 x 4 foot area will provide room for a dozen iris flowers.

Lemon GrassGrower: Rosemary Hill Herb Farm
Price: $6.00 ( 6" pot )Available (Exact): 6
Widely used in Asian cuisine as well as in delicious tea, this lemon flavored herb is easy to grow and will regrow for multiple harvests throughout season. You may use the small, new leaves cut up in dishes but larger leaves become sharp and should be bundled when cooking, then disgarded before serving. Multiplies like daylilies from underneath. May dig up and separate, then use tender white part in cooking as well. Tender perennial, so must be mulched well or dug up over winter.

Aesculus pavia, or red buckeye, is a hardy, wide-growing, native species found statewide except in the far northwest. Keep one of the large "nuts" in your pocket for good luck or plant it (very shallowly) for a large, airy, deer-resistant shrub.. Brilliant red flowers are among the first in the spring and attract hummingbirds. Sun or shade. This year's crop.

Red Spider LiliesGrower: Burns Twice Farm
Price: $10.00 ( 5 bulbs )Available (Exact): 3
Red Spider Lilies (Lycoris radiate) seem to be everywhere this Fall, popping-up in the most unusual places. These lilies are in the Amaryllis family and are showy, especially when planted in groups. They spread by bulbs--which are poisonous (so take proper precautions). Red Spider Lilies are hardy, tolerant of many soils, and deer resistant. A few bulbs will reproduce and can be spread over time to other spots.
Some Asian farmers have used red spider lilies to keep mice and other pests away from their crops (ref: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycoris_radiata.)
These bulbs were rescued from our Aunt's homestead near Pine Bluff.

Twofer--make that THREEfer!
The Tea Camellia, The Tea Camellia, Camellia sinensis, is an elegant, evergreen shrub. Mature plants have small, white, jasmine-like flowers with yellow centers which bees frequent on warm days late into the Fall. The hardy shrub is slow-growing and best kept to about four feet tall by pruning. Situate several plants together to create a hedge and trim regularly throughout the growing season. The plants do best in well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil in full-sun and partial shade. Tea camellias can also can be planted in containers with lime-free compost.
The best tea is made from freshly-formed, young leaves. Cut-off the tips of twigs with some of the younger leaves (called "first flush"). Lay these small leaves out on a sheet of paper in a warm place for 24 hours so they will wither and lose moisture. These withered leaves are dried and rolled to produce your own organic green tea. Roll the leaves longwise as tightly as possible between both hands to produce a long, twist of whole leaf. Place the rolled leaves on a sheet of foil in a warm oven (around 200 degrees for a few minutes until dry. Place few leaves in a pot and add boiling water. Brew the tea for a few minutes to desired strength. Enjoy! Infuse different herbs or fragrant flowers to create your own, unique blend.
