Spa City Co-op is 10 years old!

Dear Spa City Co-op Members –

One evening in June 2008, fifty-plus people attended a meeting at the Greenley Foods warehouse to form a food co-op. A corporation was formed to implement the organization of a brick-and-mortar store selling locally sourced foods and goods with an emphasis on farms who practiced ‘clean growing’, without the use of pesticides and herbicides, hormones, and other contaminants. This organization was given the name “Spa City Co-op”.

But by the early fall of 2008, the economic tsunami of the financial sector made the formation of a physical store unfeasible. In this wake emerged a new kind of commerce, that done by the Internet, in the form of LocallyGrown.net. Many thanks to Cory of Falling Sky Farms in Conway for bringing this to our doorstep just as we needed it. Spacity.locallygrown.net was formed, with the pick-up site at Greenley Foods.

Fast forward ten years to 2018. The Co-op has moved twice to land in it’s current location at Emergent Arts, acquiring a cooler and a freezer, disbanding the corporation in favor of a simple online buyer’s club, run completely by volunteers. We still seek to provide a sales platform for small farmers within 100 miles of Hot Springs, selling products that are as fresh and unadulterated as possible.

Spa City Co-op thanks the members for this achievement. We’re nothing without your patronage and support. Please join us in celebrating this milestone of a decade, by ordering this market, opening Saturday with pickup Friday June 15th. We’ll have a ‘birthday’ cake, and the first 25 people to pick up will receive a canvas tote bag to carry your groceries.

Many Thanks,
The Market Manager Team: Nan Cameron, cashier, Julie Alexander, Karen Schuman, and Karen Holcomb
